And if you have a mental health issue like depression, it’s important to get adequate treatment because that is also stress on the brain. The Brain Health Initiative, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that champions innovative initiatives, projects, programs, science, innovation and services that protect brain health, optimize brain performance, and fight brain illness across the lifespan. Exercise helps you keep a healthy weight, lowers your risk for heart disease, and helps you make brain chemicals that improve your mood. Brain conditions account for a large portion of the global disease burden—a challenge substantially exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. For example, there’s been a more than 25 percent increase in major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders compared to pre-COVID-19 worldwide.3 Brain health remains one of the least addressed, least resourced health topics. The call to optimize brain health is now a local, regional and global priority.

Not enough essential fatty acids in growing children can have lasting effects on the brain and can cause learning problems. We worked closely with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to help develop and deliver a free, web-based, interactive digital curriculum to upskill educators in identifying and supporting youth exposed to traumatic stress. Initial pilots have shown success, and the curriculum is being scaled in the United States with potential opportunities to develop training for other global contexts as well.
